Natural stone is typically classified into two general categories according to its composition: siliceous stone or calcareous stone. Learning the difference is important when it comes to cleaning your Natural Stone. Air Fresh Chem-Dry’s professionals will test your stone during a free on site estimate.
Siliceous stone is derived from mostly silica or quartz-like particles. This stone is very durable and relatively easy to clean with mild acidic cleaning solutions. Types of siliceous stone include sandstone, bluestone, brownstone, sandstone, slate and granite.
The primary component of Calcareous Stone is calcium carbonate. This stone is sensitive to acidic cleaning products and often requires different cleaning procedures than siliceous stone. Limestone, Onyx, Travertine, and Marble are all types of Calcareous Stone. What may work on siliceous stone may not be suitable on calcareous surfaces.
Polishing produces a finish that has a glossy surface, reflects light, while emphasizing the making and coloring of the material. This type of finish is used on furniture tops, walls and other items as well as flooring and floor tiles.
A honed finish is a satin smooth surface with very little light reflection. Typically, a honed finish is preferred for stair treads, thresholds, and floors as well as locations where heavy traffic will wear off the polished finish. A honed finish may also be used on furniture tops and other surfaces.
Granite floor tiles often have a rough textured finish known as a flamed finish.
